Korab–Koritnik: Restoring Nature, Empowering People

Project Overview

Korab–Koritnik: Restoring Nature, Empowering People is a landscape-level conservation initiative designed to contribute to the long-term conservation, restoration and sustainable management of Korab–Koritnik Nature Park.

The project combines ecological restoration, biodiversity monitoring, wildfire resilience, participatory governance and sustainable livelihood development, recognizing that effective conservation requires both healthy ecosystems and empowered local communities.

It builds on established cooperation between protected-area authorities, municipalities, communities and cross-border partners and introduces innovative approaches including citizen monitoring, youth engagement, eco-tourism pilots and renewable-energy solutions.

What We Do

The project supports restoration of priority habitats and ecological corridors, improved biodiversity monitoring, wildfire risk assessment and prevention, sustainable use of natural resources and stronger community participation in protected-area management.

It also supports sustainable livelihood opportunities connected with medicinal and aromatic plants, eco-tourism and renewable energy. Youth and schools are engaged through environmental education, eco-camps, citizen science and park-focused initiatives.

Expected Impact

The project will contribute to healthier ecosystems, strengthened ecological connectivity, better wildfire preparedness, improved protected-area governance and more sustainable use of natural resources.

It will also strengthen opportunities for local people to connect conservation with sustainable livelihoods and help position Korab–Koritnik as a model of community-led and cross-border conservation within the European Green Belt.
