Macedonia Fritillary (Fritillaria macedonica Bornm.) PONT Project

Macedonia Fritillary (Fritillaria macedonica Bornm.) is a very beautiful flower belonging to the Liliaceae lily family, endemic to Albania and North Macedonia. The genus Fritillaria comprises bulbous, perennial species that can be found in temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. Recently, the plant has also been found in Greece, North Macedonia, and Kosovo, making it a Balkan endemic species. Among these few locations, Albania is home to the Korab-Koritnik Natural Park, where this beautiful species is found in several places. The plant is distinguished from other Fritillaria species by the shape of its flower cup, its color, and the inner part of its petals, which are 'decorated' with squares in the shape of a chessboard pattern. Fritillaria is a rare and highly significant species of Albania's flora, making its recognition and protection essential.

ALCDF, within the framework of the project "Protection and Sustainable Use of Protected Areas in Shar Mountain, Mavrova, and Korab-Koritnik," is implementing a study on the Inventory of Rare and Endemic Plants for the Korab-Koritnik Natural Park in cooperation with the expert team of the Iliria Association. This project is funded by the PONT program – Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust, implemented by ALCDF and partners CSCD and LAG Dibra Turistike.
